Travel dialysis Review 5 stars
I have been having dialysis 3 times a week since last November in Jersey, Channel Islands. Having to receive dialysis that often makes planning holidays all the more complicated. We wished to return to Dromoland Castle in Co. Clare http://www.dromoland.ie, Ireland for Christmas and New Year so we contacted the nearest hospitals to see if they had availability for dialysis over the holiday season.
Unfortunately none of them would accept holidaymakers for dialysis. My PA then came across the website for Irish Holiday Dialysis (IHD) in Banteer, Co. Cork https://www.irishholidaydialysis.ie. We made contact with the owners, who confirmed availability for 4 sessions on our requested dates and we were set for our holiday. This is the only facility in Ireland at present that caters to holidaymakers requiring dialysis.
The drive from Dromoland to Banteer took about 1.15hrs. One could not help wondering where we were going as we drove down a beautiful and remote country lane, which may have caused concern, but what a delightful surprise to arrive at a traditional Irish cottage, which is Mrs Phelan’s private residence. One of the rooms in the cottage has been transformed into a dialysis centre with two dialysis chairs overlooking outstanding countryside. The room was spotless, very well equipped and between Eileen and her colleague Barbara Wallace I received the best care imaginable.
Eileen’s husband Brian was on hand during my treatment with some wonderful food, teas and coffee. We were never hungry!
It is quite fascinating to me that the interruption of dialysis when one is on holiday could be a bit of a bore, with IHD it is such a pleasure it is part of the holiday. The whole experience was amazing; so much so that I booked there for a further 4 sessions in April when we visited Dromoland Castle again with two friends from the USA. While I was at dialysis my wife and friends visited Killarney and other close by towns.
When they stayed with me while having my treatment my wife and friends had a very relaxing time and were well looked after also. I would highly recommend IHD to anyone requiring dialysis wanting to visit Ireland.
